View larger image of 'Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture'Charles, Graham -  Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture
A welcome new book on a popular genus of Cacti from a well known author in the Cactus Plant World. Based on his extensive experience of cultivating these plants and observing them in habitat, the book is written in his usual informative and easy to read style. After brief introductory sections on their history, characteristics, classification, cultivation, habitat and distribution, the bulk of the book covers the 56 species that he recognises. For each species and recognised sub-species there is a full description, etymology (meaning of the species name), distribution with a map, conservation status, history, commentary and cultivation information. The 624 colour illustrations cover the typical countryside they live in as well as plants in habitat, historic illustrations and plants in cultivation, and show some of the variation in the species. Final sections cover further reading, references, chromosome counts, cristate and variegated plants and Graham’s collection numbers. All that the grower would want. 2009 11 ¼ x 8 ½ 288 pages

Following on quickly from their Epithelantha book, this one looks at plants towards the opposite end of the size scale! It starts with the history of the plants, geographical distribution, ethnobotany and uses (anyone for Echinocactus “Marmalade”?) before going on to the species including “Homolocephala”. There are descriptions, distribution with map, ecology and cultivation, and each is preceded with a narrative of the author’s experiences when seeing the plants in habitat. Final sections look at general cultivation considerations, pests, propagation and bibliography. Well illustrated with many colour photos mainly in habitat, many large format. Translated from the Italian edition. 2011 9 ½ x 6 ½ 86 pages.

An interesting booklet on a cactus genus which many growers have one or more of, but probably know little about. Written by two people who have studied them in the wild as well as cultivation, they start by looking at the characteristics of the genus and their history in cultivation, and the factors they used to determine the species. Each specie and variety are then described with their history, distribution, ecology, what else they grow with in habitat and cultivation advice. Well illustrated with colour photos, mainly in habitat, and with close ups of a single areole and distribution map. Final sections cover conservation and general points on cutivation and propagation. English translation form the Italian. 2011 9 ½ x 6 ½ 64 pages

View larger image of 'The New Cactus Lexicon'Hunt et al -  The New Cactus Lexicon
Thoughtfully divided in to two volumes for ease of handling, the smaller contains the descriptions of all known genera and species. And for the conservative Cactus grower (and you know who I mean!) you already knew about the main Genera changes – Parodia including Notocactus, Echinopsis including Lobivia and Trichocereus etc. And don’t forget that it means having to remember how to correctly spell fewer Genera! But it isn’t lumping for lumping sake – I noticed Mammilloydia candida unlumped from Mammillaria and Cumarinia odorata still recognised (this latter may be as a hybrid). But the real gem is the second volume which illustrates all the recognised species of cacti, either in habitat or of known wild origin – over 2500 pictures in all. They are grouped in look-alike order to help you identify plants. And it is such a joy to browse that you will very soon be smoothed into accepting the new classification the book propounds, and maybe encouraging you to try some of those more obscure plants that perhaps you haven’t seen before. In all it is a wonderful and comprehensive set of two books which celebrates the entire Cactus family, with illustrations covering all the genera and species like they have never been before. 2006 11 ¼ x 8 ¼ Text volume 373 pages, Illustration volume 526 pages.

For a long time Opuntias were regarded as easy rampant beginner’s plants that quickly outgrow their space, rarely flowered and often have unforgiving spines. But with the many explorations in recent times a wide range of plants have come in to cultivation which answer most of these issues – except perhaps the painful spines in all cases! So this book is aimed at the average grower to show them what is now available and what it looks like with many colour photos a mix of habitat and cultivated plants. Their popularity has soared in recent times and this attractively produced book will no doubt boost that somewhat. Arranged by genus overall information is given for each before providing brief information of the suggested species and illustrating them. 2016 11 x 8 ½ 136 pages

This is a new book (not an “Update” to his first book published in 1996 and much information in the first book is not repeated) and it does stand on its own. It is based on the 240 days over 7 trips the author has spent in their habitat since the first book was published, and describes all species by reference to their distribution over six habitat areas. Their total environment is considered, and there is also a section of some of the other plants they grow with. The plants are shown as they really are, not just “show specimens”, and there is a fascinating section with some comparative photographs of specific plants showing the changes over the years. The nomenclature followed is geared towards the needs of collectors and growers, to allow identification of differing forms of interest to the grower, and is cross referenced to the names in the New Cactus Lexicon. Cultivation is only covered by a section of pictures from the collections of some noted growers. Very well illustrated with numerous good colour photos. 2006 11 ¼ x 8 ½ 240 pages.
