View larger image of 'Epithelantha 2011'Donati & Zanovello -  Epithelantha 2011
An interesting booklet on a cactus genus which many growers have one or more of, but probably know little about. Written by two people who have studied them in the wild as well as cultivation, they start by looking at the characteristics of the genus and their history in cultivation, and the factors they used to determine the species. Each specie and variety are then described with their history, distribution, ecology, what else they grow with in habitat and cultivation advice. Well illustrated with colour photos, mainly in habitat, and with close ups of a single areole and distribution map. Final sections cover conservation and general points on cutivation and propagation. English translation form the Italian. 2011 9 ½ x 6 ½ 64 pages

View larger image of 'Mapping the Cacti of Mexico Part 1'Hernández & Gómez-Hinostrosa -  Mapping the Cacti of Mexico Part 1
This is the first attempt to use what documented information there is from a wide range of herbarium sources – 68 in all - to map the locations of 33 genera and 114 species from Mexico using over 5783 records from over 33000 recorded to date. Some of the major genera have been excluded – Coryphantha, Mammillaria, Ferocactus, Echinocereus and Opuntia – where the taxonomy is still problematic or there is insufficient location information available, but there are many other popular genera included such as Ariocarpus and Turbinicarpus etc. None the less it is a very useful and interesting book, which in addition to the maps does provide additional information on the habitats the plants come from as well quite a number of colour photos of some of the plants both in habitat and cultivation. Volume 7 of Succulent Plant Research published by David Hunt. 2011 9 ½ x 6 ¾ 128 pages

View larger image of 'Melocacti of Cuba'Rigerszki, Delanoy, Ujreti & Vilardebo -  Melocacti of Cuba
Another good book from Cactus & Co on a less well known and covered subject. Concentrating on the plants in habitat, each species is described and well illustrated, and there is a short section on cultivation. In addition the history of the discovery of the plants, their evolution, classification and unresolved areas are covered, as well as Cuba’s geology, climate and phytogeography – although it should be emphasised this is not a serious scientific study. And we do get a glimpse of the other Cactus species that grow there, as well as Agaves and Palms. 2007 8 ¼ x 8 ¼ 174 pages
