An introductory book covering 100 of the most attractive species with an emphasis on their use in landscaping and large pot cultivation. Aimed at the popular market, you have to like the common names under which the plants are listed – my favourite is “Lemon Pledge-Scented Pincushion” (for Mam baumii). Nevertheless there is much of interest in this book which starts with the usual introductory sections before going on to the plants organised by plant form and the information includes culinary uses! The colour photos include both plants in cultivation – in pots as well as bedded out - and habitat and there are some impressive clumps and attractive examples so well worth the inexpensive cost. 2012 9 x 8 227 pages

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

Aeoniums and Echeverias are very fashionable these days, and this book is a visual feast of how the plants can look when given their ideal conditions! The author is a Californian nurseryman growing these plants, and he has pulled together the best selection of the plants available and shows them to their colourful best. Introductory sections cover growing them in containers and outside in suitable climates, before going on to go through many of the species and cultivars. Towards the end of the book there are increasingly short sections on a number of other succulents, from Dudleyas through Crassulas Senecios, Sedums, Kalanchoes, Cotyledons, Mesmebs, Stapelaids and what he terms “Odds and ends” 2017 10 x 9 ½ 290 pages

Confused by all the new genera names which have appeared in recent years for these plants, and the differences in opinions in classification? Then you’re no longer alone – the writer of so many books on cacti & other succulent plants has taken up the challenge to not only help us to get to grips with the various classifications, but more importantly for the grower and collector of these distinctive plants what the plants and flowers actually look like. Taking no view on which classification to follow, the genera are arranged and documented so that the reader can work out what its name is in whichever classification the reader wishes to know. And for the ordinary grower who isn’t concerned about classification it has 686 colour photos and for those you would like to obtain you can find out under what name(s) it might be found in catalogues. For those who just like plants it is a marvellous picture book. As ever from the author and the publisher (BCSS) it is very well produced. Will be a classic for a very long time like the author’s other books. Updated and expanded edition of the 2010 original with more pages and pictures with names brought even more up to date than before. 2014 11 x 8 ½ 221 pages

A useful book on a poorly known Genus, it is based on the draft started by Albert Pritchard who had seen plants in habitat and cultivated as wide a range of species as was possible. With Albert’s death Pjotr Lawant completed it and brought it up to date in the same style that Albert had used. 71 more or less succulent species are covered, along with cultivation, glossary, literature, list of all species and synonyms with a good number of colour photos, historic botanic illustrations and sketches. 2017 11 ½ x 8 ¼ 100 pages

View larger image of 'Monadenium'Pritchard, Albert -  Monadenium
A marvellous book on these little known mainly East African plants which last had a book devoted to them nearly 50 years ago. Although they’ve been recently reclassified as Euphorbias, the author sticks to their more familiar Monadenium names (except for two species named since the reclassification) with the new name consigned to the end of their descriptions and an appendix. After a brief introduction on what a Monadenium is, the majority of the book is an A-Z of the species with habitat and description and concise cultivation comments where known. The book finishes with a brief general cultivation section. It is all very well illustrated with many good colour photos and some botanical illustrations, some quite large format. Another very good Cactus & Co publication. 2010 11 ½ x 8 ¼ 109 pages

View larger image of 'Succulent Compositae'Rowley, Gordon -  Succulent Compositae
This is Gordon’s attempt to popularise a group of somewhat overlooked plants, and whilst subtitled “A grower’s guide to the succulent species of Senecio & Othonna”, as you’d expect he does also cover the history and morphology of the plants in his easy going manner. The succulent species and forms are individually covered in detail and are illustrated with colour photos and the occasional reproduction of an historic print. 1994 10 ¼ x 7 ¼ 238 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being bumped in transit. I’m afraid that I cannot guarantee that there is no minor bumping on the copies I supply, but for those books with more serious damage I have reduced the price accordingly.

First in a planned series of books covering all the Aloe family – including Gasteria, Haworthia etc – this covers what in latest classification are now termed Aloidendron, six species of Tree Aloe, plus the closely related Kumara plicatilis - what was previously known as Aloe plicatilis. As with all Ernst van Jaarsveld books, there is much wider information than just the plants themselves. It starts with an explanation about the background to the reclassification and botany, before going in to the history of the plants discovery by early settlers and explorers until the present day. Chapters then cover their distribution and ecology, and cultivation. The species are then covered in detail with an attractive full page colour painting by Eric Judd and colour photos showing the whole plant, flowers, habitat etc. 2015 10 ½ x 8 74 pages
