View larger image of 'The Gardener's Guide to Cactus'Calhoun, Scott -  The Gardener's Guide to Cactus
An introductory book covering 100 of the most attractive species with an emphasis on their use in landscaping and large pot cultivation. Aimed at the popular market, you have to like the common names under which the plants are listed – my favourite is “Lemon Pledge-Scented Pincushion” (for Mam baumii). Nevertheless there is much of interest in this book which starts with the usual introductory sections before going on to the plants organised by plant form and the information includes culinary uses! The colour photos include both plants in cultivation – in pots as well as bedded out - and habitat and there are some impressive clumps and attractive examples so well worth the inexpensive cost. 2012 9 x 8 227 pages

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

The first edition of this book was very popular and hard to get hold of, so this expanded and revised edition will be welcome by many people who couldn’t get hold of the first edition – and even many of those who did have it. Eight extra pages describe and illustrate the new taxa and cultivars since the first edition, plus there are additional pictures of those in the first edition. Lithops remain the most popular of Mesembs and are widely grown, so the cultivation information in addition to the descriptions and being able to see what they typically look like makes this a most useful book. 2010 9 ¾ x 7 ¼ 156 pages

View larger image of 'Mesembs: The Titanopsis Group'Hammer, Steven -  Mesembs: The Titanopsis Group
Many people grow some of the Mesembs, but don’t venture much beyond Lithops and Conophytums. This is a shame as there are many attractive plants which are quite amenable in cultivation. There have been books on Mesembs before, but as there are so many species they can’t cover more than a small sample of the types. There has also been limited information on their cultivation which varies with the wide range of climate conditions the plants live in, and their varying ease of adaption to cultivation in our less than ideal conditions. So this, the first in a projected series, will be welcomed by many, as it both shows what can be grown and how to cultivate them. It is well illustrated with many colour photos both in cultivation and habitat including variations and close ups of leaf textures. Plus there are a number of botanic art paintings, seed capsule drawings and distribution maps. The genera covered in this volume are Aloinopsis, Deilanthe, Didymaotus, Ihlenfeldtia, Nananthus, Prepodesma, Tanquana ,Titanopsis and Vanheerdea Appendices include reprints of historical notes on cultivation by Tischer and others by Schwantes, Nel and Hall. Written by a well known personality who has extensive knowledge of the plants both in habitat and cultivation this well produced book will be the ultimate reference on these plants and will do a lot to increase their popularity in cultivation.

This is a substantial book for those who want to know more about where the plants grow, what they look like in habitat and their variability. It isn’t about cultivation, or the cultivars which are in fashion these days. Based on his 16 field trips the author suggests a new simplified taxonomy. There are profiles of 60 people who have been prominent in their study and also a comprehensive bibliography. Well illustrated with heading on for 2000 photos, you’ll get a good idea of the leaf patterns as there is hardly a flower shown – maybe to show the patterns but the author said he travelled in Southern Africa during the Summer – to avoid the European winter – so no doubt too early for most of them. 2017 12 x 8 ½ 487 pages

The author is a Succulent Plant Nurseryman based in Australia, and has set out to provide more information on them and stimulate interest in their cultivation by writing and publishing an attractive book on the subject. Knowledge of their cultivation is almost unknown, and this book doesn’t have the answers but aims to encourage experimentation and the collation of successful techniques. A very wide range of plants are covered, from tropical Hoyas and Dischidias through orchids and halophytes through to more “desert” type plants such as Calandrinias organised by growth type – ground, ephiphytes (including rock dwellers), shrubs and trees, and is extremely well illustrated with many colour photos. 2007 11 ¼ x 8 ¾ 240 pages

Confused by all the new genera names which have appeared in recent years for these plants, and the differences in opinions in classification? Then you’re no longer alone – the writer of so many books on cacti & other succulent plants has taken up the challenge to not only help us to get to grips with the various classifications, but more importantly for the grower and collector of these distinctive plants what the plants and flowers actually look like. Taking no view on which classification to follow, the genera are arranged and documented so that the reader can work out what its name is in whichever classification the reader wishes to know. And for the ordinary grower who isn’t concerned about classification it has 686 colour photos and for those you would like to obtain you can find out under what name(s) it might be found in catalogues. For those who just like plants it is a marvellous picture book. As ever from the author and the publisher (BCSS) it is very well produced. Will be a classic for a very long time like the author’s other books. Updated and expanded edition of the 2010 original with more pages and pictures with names brought even more up to date than before. 2014 11 x 8 ½ 221 pages

View larger image of 'Haworthia for the Collector'Schulz, Rudolf -  Haworthia for the Collector
Haworthias are very popular these days, both for the species and unusually in the C&S world also for cultivars and hybrids. Although there has been a lot published in recent years on these plants, there has been little for the average or enthusiastic collector since Pilbeam’s book was published 25 years ago before colour photos became universal. So this new book which covers many of the most attractive cultivars as well as the species and illustrated in colour is sure to be welcome. Brief introductory sections cover their characteristics and habitat, after which the main part of the book looks at the species and cultivars following Bayer’s 2008 Classification with separate sections for forms which don’t fit neatly with a species and inter generic hybrids. Final sections provide views on where the cultivars might develop in the future, variegations, close up views of leaves and cross section, cultivation, pests etc and finally propagation. All well presented as we have come to expect from this author and publisher. 2009 11 x 8 ¾ 240 pages

View larger image of 'Tree Aloes of Africa'van Jaarsveld & Judd -  Tree Aloes of Africa
First in a planned series of books covering all the Aloe family – including Gasteria, Haworthia etc – this covers what in latest classification are now termed Aloidendron, six species of Tree Aloe, plus the closely related Kumara plicatilis - what was previously known as Aloe plicatilis. As with all Ernst van Jaarsveld books, there is much wider information than just the plants themselves. It starts with an explanation about the background to the reclassification and botany, before going in to the history of the plants discovery by early settlers and explorers until the present day. Chapters then cover their distribution and ecology, and cultivation. The species are then covered in detail with an attractive full page colour painting by Eric Judd and colour photos showing the whole plant, flowers, habitat etc. 2015 10 ½ x 8 74 pages

Following on from his first book on these plants 20 years ago, this is everything you’d hope from this well known botanist. It covers the history of their discovery and cultivation, his hunting for them in their natural habitats, garden uses in suitable climates, hybrids, distribution and ecology before going on to describe each of the 55 known and accepted SA species (and a couple of other) each illustrated with colour photos and a full page botanical illustration by Vicky Thomas. Maybe not the most popular of plants, but Fernwood Press have produced a book that will be enjoyed by many who haven’t previously been captivated by them. 2006 12 x 9 ¼ 176 pages
