View larger image of 'Haworthia, Haworthiopsis and Tulista: A guide for collectors and growers'Breuer & Marks -  Haworthia, Haworthiopsis and Tulista: A guide for collectors and growers
This is a book for the very enthusiastic Haworthia grower. The authors are noted growers of these plants, and have used their experience of growing them in cultivation to present their view on the grouping of the plants based on Breuer’s previous publications using their morphological characteristics, distribution, and habitat ecology – no DNA analysis here! They use the concept of a cluster with a lower grouping of aggregate to bring together the plants they believe are closely related. The names of the species for each are listed and known localities plotted on a map along with their main features. The aim is to help growers identify the plants they have, and those they would like to acquire with a name they hope will be helpful. Each name is illustrated with quite a lot of plants in cultivation with habitat identification and try to show the variation from different locations aided by a distribution map. Brief introductory sections cover the plants history and cultivation. 2023 301 pages laminated illustrated hardback 12 x 8 ½

An introductory book covering 100 of the most attractive species with an emphasis on their use in landscaping and large pot cultivation. Aimed at the popular market, you have to like the common names under which the plants are listed – my favourite is “Lemon Pledge-Scented Pincushion” (for Mam baumii). Nevertheless there is much of interest in this book which starts with the usual introductory sections before going on to the plants organised by plant form and the information includes culinary uses! The colour photos include both plants in cultivation – in pots as well as bedded out - and habitat and there are some impressive clumps and attractive examples so well worth the inexpensive cost. 2012 9 x 8 227 pages

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

Confused by all the new genera names which have appeared in recent years for these plants, and the differences in opinions in classification? Then you’re no longer alone – the writer of so many books on cacti & other succulent plants has taken up the challenge to not only help us to get to grips with the various classifications, but more importantly for the grower and collector of these distinctive plants what the plants and flowers actually look like. Taking no view on which classification to follow, the genera are arranged and documented so that the reader can work out what its name is in whichever classification the reader wishes to know. And for the ordinary grower who isn’t concerned about classification it has 686 colour photos and for those you would like to obtain you can find out under what name(s) it might be found in catalogues. For those who just like plants it is a marvellous picture book. As ever from the author and the publisher (BCSS) it is very well produced. Will be a classic for a very long time like the author’s other books. Updated and expanded edition of the 2010 original with more pages and pictures with names brought even more up to date than before. 2014 11 x 8 ½ 221 pages

A useful book on a poorly known Genus, it is based on the draft started by Albert Pritchard who had seen plants in habitat and cultivated as wide a range of species as was possible. With Albert’s death Pjotr Lawant completed it and brought it up to date in the same style that Albert had used. 71 more or less succulent species are covered, along with cultivation, glossary, literature, list of all species and synonyms with a good number of colour photos, historic botanic illustrations and sketches. 2017 11 ½ x 8 ¼ 100 pages

It covers the history of their discovery and cultivation, his hunting for them in their natural habitats, garden uses in suitable climates, hybrids, distribution and ecology before going on to describe each of the 55 known and accepted SA species (and a couple of other) each illustrated with colour photos and a full page botanical illustration by Vicky Thomas.
