This is the book that helped recruit more people to the swelling ranks of those growing these remarkable plants – the beautiful and the ugly! As ever Gordon covers ground not often covered by others in his easy style, and looks at the various types of caudiciforms and lavishly illustrates many in this large format book. 1988 10 x 10 282 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being bumped in transit. I’m afraid that I cannot guarantee that there is no minor bumping on the copies I supply, but for those books with more serious damage I have reduced the price accordingly.

View larger image of '500 Cacti'Preston-Mafham, Ken -  500 Cacti
A compact book from a well known name in the Cactus world, this presents many popular and some less well known (he emphasises the "Opuntioids") but attractive and worthwhile plants one to a page. Concise details are given for each plant which is illustrated with a colour photo - almost all of the plants are in flower and unusually for this type of book a good proportion of the pictures are of plants in habitat and the cultivated plants have many which are from habitat seed or propagations of collected material so also of interest to the more experienced grower. 2007 6 ¼ x 5 ¾ 528 pages

View larger image of 'Haworthia, Haworthiopsis and Tulista: A guide for collectors and growers'Breuer & Marks -  Haworthia, Haworthiopsis and Tulista: A guide for collectors and growers
This is a book for the very enthusiastic Haworthia grower. The authors are noted growers of these plants, and have used their experience of growing them in cultivation to present their view on the grouping of the plants based on Breuer’s previous publications using their morphological characteristics, distribution, and habitat ecology – no DNA analysis here! They use the concept of a cluster with a lower grouping of aggregate to bring together the plants they believe are closely related. The names of the species for each are listed and known localities plotted on a map along with their main features. The aim is to help growers identify the plants they have, and those they would like to acquire with a name they hope will be helpful. Each name is illustrated with quite a lot of plants in cultivation with habitat identification and try to show the variation from different locations aided by a distribution map. Brief introductory sections cover the plants history and cultivation. 2023 301 pages laminated illustrated hardback 12 x 8 ½

View larger image of 'The Bushman Candles'Craib & Lavranos -  The Bushman Candles
This fabulous large format book, on what hobbyists still tend to call Sarcocaulons but taxonomically are now all included in Monsonia and the title “Bushman Candles” neatly sidesteps, is based around the extensive field knowledge of the two authors. For each of the 15 species there is a full description and diagnostic features, geographic distribution and habitat preference, history, life history, autecology, conservation status and synonyms. This is supplemented by a distribution map and many colour photos in habitat. And one of the crowning glories of the book are the paintings by Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst for the Moffet 1979 Bothalia ion of the Genus Sarcocaulon which are reproduce life sized. If this wasn’t enough there are chapter on Bushman Candle Art, Reminiscences by Moffett, Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst by Graham Duncan, Homelands by Bowen Boshier who provided his pencil drawings to show the landscape the plants grow in, Gerhard Marx on the botanical art he provided for the book, photographing in habitat by Connall Oosterbroek who provided many of the photos, and finally their culture. For me this is an exceptional book, both on the quality and range of its contents as well as presentation. Even if you are not very interested in Bushman Candles the information on Southern African habitats and the botanical art are exceptional. Those who have been waiting a long time for it to be published won’t be disappointed by the end result! 2011 13 x 10 192 pages

A rather different and interesting book which looks at the concerns over succulent plant conservation. A brief introduction considers the evolution of succulent plants followed by the places and environments where they occur in the world. The areas of the world where they occur are then each considered in detail with their individual factors with final sections considering the risks and hotspots – places where there are unusually large numbers of species. Well illustrated with many interesting colour photos and maps. 2012 8 ¾ x 8 ¾ 128 pages

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages
