Following on from the first volume this even larger book concentrates on the ways that these plants can be trained and displayed using an approach based on Bonsai growing. It discusses which plants to select, what types of containers to use and other items such as wood or stone, training and subsequent maintenance, and whilst well illustrated in itself, the following 118 pages are a photo gallery of a wide range of superb Bonsai’d plants. And if that is not enough, the final 120 pages continue the photographic gallery of many Pachyform plants started in the first volume – there are over 500 colour photos in all. Amongst the plants are not just some familiar old friends and others which would be expected, but there are also quite a number of little known and seldom seen (at least in the UK) plants. As the first volume, it is a remarkable book. 2007 10 x 7 387 pages

View larger image of 'Succulents: Care and health'Schulz & Kapitany -  Succulents: Care and health
There have been many introductory books on Cacti etc, and they have all pretty much followed the same format – sections on where to grow them, potting mixes, pests and diseases before getting on to what is usually the major part of the book – what to grow. Well this book omits the last part and devotes much more space to the nitty gritty of growing the plants. Many pictures show what the authors talk about – is the plant happy, has it lost its roots etc, how to rejuvenate older or poorly grown plants and even bargains that you have been tempted to buy. Problems with specific groups of plants are considered. The two authors have been Australian nurserymen so have very wide experience, and some examples are for a climate that maybe some day we’ll have in the UK!. 2003 9 ¾ x 7 ¼ 103 pages

View larger image of '500 Cacti'Preston-Mafham, Ken -  500 Cacti
A compact book from a well known name in the Cactus world, this presents many popular and some less well known (he emphasises the "Opuntioids") but attractive and worthwhile plants one to a page. Concise details are given for each plant which is illustrated with a colour photo - almost all of the plants are in flower and unusually for this type of book a good proportion of the pictures are of plants in habitat and the cultivated plants have many which are from habitat seed or propagations of collected material so also of interest to the more experienced grower. 2007 6 ¼ x 5 ¾ 528 pages

View larger image of 'Haworthia for the Collector'Schulz, Rudolf -  Haworthia for the Collector
Haworthias are very popular these days, both for the species and unusually in the C&S world also for cultivars and hybrids. Although there has been a lot published in recent years on these plants, there has been little for the average or enthusiastic collector since Pilbeam’s book was published 25 years ago before colour photos became universal. So this new book which covers many of the most attractive cultivars as well as the species and illustrated in colour is sure to be welcome. Brief introductory sections cover their characteristics and habitat, after which the main part of the book looks at the species and cultivars following Bayer’s 2008 Classification with separate sections for forms which don’t fit neatly with a species and inter generic hybrids. Final sections provide views on where the cultivars might develop in the future, variegations, close up views of leaves and cross section, cultivation, pests etc and finally propagation. All well presented as we have come to expect from this author and publisher. 2009 11 x 8 ¾ 240 pages

Final sections look at general cultivation considerations, pests, propagation and bibliography. Well illustrated with many colour photos mainly in habitat, many large format. The author shares his knowledge from several visit to this area which for many years was very difficult to traverse and still is one of the more challenging and remote areas. We are taken on a trip from north to south divided up in to several sections, each with a page or two of introductory information followed by numerous colour photos of the plants by both the author and others, and sometimes scenery and animals. Much cheaper, and more comfortable, than going there yourself and a good substitute for most of us! 2015 11 x 8 ¼ 233 pages

Another title from the author whose output is nearly as prolific as some of the leading fiction writers (but does he get the TV interviews they do?), ably assisted by the person who has usually been the photographer for John’s text! As usual it is everything you would expect from the authors, and is quite stunningly illustrated with many colour photos. In addition to Ariocarpus, the genera included are Acharagma,Astrophytum, Aztekium, Cumarinia, Epithelantha, Geohintonia, Leuchtenbergia, Lophophora, Neolloydia, Obregonia, Ortegocactus, Pelecyphora, Stenocactus, Strombocactus, Toumeya and Turbinicarpus. View larger image of 'Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture'Charles, Graham -  Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture
A welcome new book on a popular genus of Cacti from a well known author in the Cactus Plant World. Based on his extensive experience of cultivating these plants and observing them in habitat, the book is written in his usual informative and easy to read style. After brief introductory sections on their history, characteristics, classification, cultivation, habitat and distribution, the bulk of the book covers the 56 species that he recognises. For each species and recognised sub-species there is a full description, etymology (meaning of the species name), distribution with a map, conservation status, history, commentary and cultivation information. The 624 colour illustrations cover the typical countryside they live in as well as plants in habitat, historic illustrations and plants in cultivation, and show some of the variation in the species. Final sections cover further reading, references, chromosome counts, cristate and variegated plants and Graham’s collection numbers. All that the grower would want. 2009 11 ¼ x 8 ½ 288 pages

View larger image of '100 Cactus Argentinos: Spanish language'Kiesling & Demaio -  100 Cactus Argentinos: Spanish language
An updated and expanded edition of the book first published in 2005 – this time Roberto Kiesling has teamed up with Pablo Demaio. The first few pages cover what is a cactus and other basic information, and a few at the end are on cultivation. But the vast majority of the book is details about the plants. 29 species get a full page colour photo with text and supplementary colour photos on the opposite one, whereas the rest get just a single whole page with text and colour photos. The vast majority of the photos are of plants obviously in habitat with some equally obviously in cultivation, and some indeterminate! Spanish 2018 9 ½ x 6 ¾ 160 pages
