View larger image of 'The New Cactus Lexicon'Hunt et al -  The New Cactus Lexicon
Thoughtfully divided in to two volumes for ease of handling, the smaller contains the descriptions of all known genera and species. And for the conservative Cactus grower (and you know who I mean!) you already knew about the main Genera changes – Parodia including Notocactus, Echinopsis including Lobivia and Trichocereus etc. And don’t forget that it means having to remember how to correctly spell fewer Genera! But it isn’t lumping for lumping sake – I noticed Mammilloydia candida unlumped from Mammillaria and Cumarinia odorata still recognised (this latter may be as a hybrid). But the real gem is the second volume which illustrates all the recognised species of cacti, either in habitat or of known wild origin – over 2500 pictures in all. They are grouped in look-alike order to help you identify plants. And it is such a joy to browse that you will very soon be smoothed into accepting the new classification the book propounds, and maybe encouraging you to try some of those more obscure plants that perhaps you haven’t seen before. In all it is a wonderful and comprehensive set of two books which celebrates the entire Cactus family, with illustrations covering all the genera and species like they have never been before. 2006 11 ¼ x 8 ¼ Text volume 373 pages, Illustration volume 526 pages.

A marvellous collection of photos which show the beauty that can be found in the succulent plant world – primarily in the other succulents. The author is a Californian nurseryman, and the size and colouration of many of the plants are beyond what can be achieved in less suitable climates. But maybe with climate change who knows! Meanwhile we can enjoy the author’s eye for a good photo showing their colour, form and uses and maybe get a few ideas to experiment with and look at our plants with fresh eyes. 10 x 9 ½ 2014 244 pages.

Another title from the author whose output is nearly as prolific as some of the leading fiction writers (but does he get the TV interviews they do?), ably assisted by the person who has usually been the photographer for John’s text! As usual it is everything you would expect from the authors, and is quite stunningly illustrated with many colour photos. In addition to Ariocarpus, the genera included are Acharagma,Astrophytum, Aztekium, Cumarinia, Epithelantha, Geohintonia, Leuchtenbergia, Lophophora, Neolloydia, Obregonia, Ortegocactus, Pelecyphora, Stenocactus, Strombocactus, Toumeya and Turbinicarpus. Aeoniums and Echeverias are very fashionable these days, and this book is a visual feast of how the plants can look when given their ideal conditions! The author is a Californian nurseryman growing these plants, and he has pulled together the best selection of the plants available and shows them to their colourful best. Introductory sections cover growing them in containers and outside in suitable climates, before going on to go through many of the species and cultivars. Towards the end of the book there are increasingly short sections on a number of other succulents, from Dudleyas through Crassulas Senecios, Sedums, Kalanchoes, Cotyledons, Mesmebs, Stapelaids and what he terms “Odds and ends” 2017 10 x 9 ½ 290 pages

Gordon’s books have always covered interesting and important subjects which have been overlooked previously, and this one continues the tradition. Some cacti and succulents have been hybridised or attractive forms selected for a long time, and he explains how this has come about. A large part of the book surveys the results achieved, and if you would like to try yourself to produce new and striking plants he explains the various way to try it – you don’t have to be a large multinational conglomerate for some of the methods which amateurs have successfully used in the past! This is a substantial book for those who want to know more about where the plants grow, what they look like in habitat and their variability. It isn’t about cultivation, or the cultivars which are in fashion these days. Based on his 16 field trips the author suggests a new simplified taxonomy. There are profiles of 60 people who have been prominent in their study and also a comprehensive bibliography. Well illustrated with heading on for 2000 photos, you’ll get a good idea of the leaf patterns as there is hardly a flower shown – maybe to show the patterns but the author said he travelled in Southern Africa during the Summer – to avoid the European winter – so no doubt too early for most of them. 2017 12 x 8 ½ 487 pages

A chunky field guide style book which explains what is a succulent – which is much wider than UK growers would usually include such as bulbs and other borderline plants. It then considers conservation issues, and the plants’ distribution and their horticultural uses. Key features of each plant family are then given before going on to detail more than 700 species arranged by family with each given an introduction. Species include introduced and garden escapes as well as native plants, with each given a concise description, and inevitably only a small part of all the species can be included in a book of this size so the more interesting and commonly seen are concentrated on. A very large number of colour photos are crammed into the book. 2017 8 ¼ x 5 ¾ 464 pages

After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

General information on their habitats and growing are also given, and quite a number of colour illustrations show a sample of the numerous species. The main impact is from the 12 pages of colour illustrations of Lithops, showing variation of forms for each specie and form, which in spite of much larger books published since is still very useful and attractive. Much more useful than its small size would imply. 1986 9 x 6 58 pages

A welcome new book on a popular genus of Cacti from a well known author in the Cactus Plant World. Based on his extensive experience of cultivating these plants and observing them in habitat, the book is written in his usual informative and easy to read style. After brief introductory sections on their history, characteristics, classification, cultivation, habitat and distribution, the bulk of the book covers the 56 species that he recognises. For each species and recognised sub-species there is a full description, etymology (meaning of the species name), distribution with a map, conservation status, history, commentary and cultivation information. The 624 colour illustrations cover the typical countryside they live in as well as plants in habitat, historic illustrations and plants in cultivation, and show some of the variation in the species. Final sections cover further reading, references, chromosome counts, cristate and variegated plants and Graham’s collection numbers. All that the grower would want. 2009 11 ¼ x 8 ½ 288 pages
