View larger image of 'Taxonomy of the Cactaceae - English Edition'Lode, Joel -  Taxonomy of the Cactaceae - English Edition
The classification of the Cacti has always been controversial, and this latest attempt will no doubt cause a lot of discussion! The author has taken what DNA studies have been made to date and tried to present them in an understandable fashion and then gives his current assessment – which he accepts will change with further refinement of the techniques and the understanding they give. Whilst this is inevitably somewhat technical there is plenty to interest those less concerned with these details. The first volume starts with an introduction as to how plants are named, the recent history of cactus taxonomy, plant relationships and convergence. There then follows a more detailed look at how classification is approached along with all its challenges, how cacti originated, pollination and dispersal and evolution. Whilst inevitably it is technical, it is presented in a way which people interested in the subject will be able to absorb. And it isn’t lengthy – this is just the first 40 pages. The accepted genera are divided across the two volumes, and for each accepted genus starts with the meaning of the name, altitude and description followed by his comments on the classification. Then the species he accepts, habitat, distribution. There are some colour photos in with this text, but the majority of the colour photos – a mix of habitat and cultivation - are in a separate section at the end of the appropriate volume forming about half of the book. The book is attractively presented and a pleasure to browse, and you don’t have to be obsessed with the plants classification to get a lot of out the book – but there is no cultivation advice other than the habitat and altitude data. English edition 12 x 8 ½ Volume 1 667 pages, volume 2 719 pages plus separate index of 44 pages

This is the illustrations from the original edition, supplemented with an extra 80, in a slightly smaller format (but the photos are still a good useable size). In addition there is a small section of 5 pages at the beginning of corrections and updates since the first edition, Many people wanted just the illustrations of the first edition but it was only sold as a two volume set so this affordable edition meets their needs. It is also a handy size for taking down to the greenhouse for comparing with plants, so could also be useful to those who purchased the first edition who don’t want to risk spoiling their expensive copy and is also much easier to use there. 2013 9 ½ x 7 527 pages

View larger image of 'Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture'Charles, Graham -  Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture
A welcome new book on a popular genus of Cacti from a well known author in the Cactus Plant World. Based on his extensive experience of cultivating these plants and observing them in habitat, the book is written in his usual informative and easy to read style. After brief introductory sections on their history, characteristics, classification, cultivation, habitat and distribution, the bulk of the book covers the 56 species that he recognises. For each species and recognised sub-species there is a full description, etymology (meaning of the species name), distribution with a map, conservation status, history, commentary and cultivation information. The 624 colour illustrations cover the typical countryside they live in as well as plants in habitat, historic illustrations and plants in cultivation, and show some of the variation in the species. Final sections cover further reading, references, chromosome counts, cristate and variegated plants and Graham’s collection numbers. All that the grower would want. 2009 11 ¼ x 8 ½ 288 pages

View larger image of 'The Remarkable Baobab'Pakenham, Thomas -  The Remarkable Baobab
Whilst this well known author was going round the world looking at the trees to include in his marvellous book “Remarkable Trees of the World”, he fell in love with the Baobabs with the result that he devoted a book to just these trees. In addition to the African specie, which is probably the best known, he also saw 3 of the Madagascar species (slimmer and less craggy than the African trees) and the Australian specie (sort of mid way in form). As usual with this author, it is well written, and full of wonderful colour photos. Another interesting and attractive tree for Christmas reading. 143 pages 8 ¾ x 7 ¼ 2004

View larger image of 'The Bushman Candles'Craib & Lavranos -  The Bushman Candles
This fabulous large format book, on what hobbyists still tend to call Sarcocaulons but taxonomically are now all included in Monsonia and the title “Bushman Candles” neatly sidesteps, is based around the extensive field knowledge of the two authors. For each of the 15 species there is a full description and diagnostic features, geographic distribution and habitat preference, history, life history, autecology, conservation status and synonyms. This is supplemented by a distribution map and many colour photos in habitat. And one of the crowning glories of the book are the paintings by Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst for the Moffet 1979 Bothalia ion of the Genus Sarcocaulon which are reproduce life sized. If this wasn’t enough there are chapter on Bushman Candle Art, Reminiscences by Moffett, Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst by Graham Duncan, Homelands by Bowen Boshier who provided his pencil drawings to show the landscape the plants grow in, Gerhard Marx on the botanical art he provided for the book, photographing in habitat by Connall Oosterbroek who provided many of the photos, and finally their culture. For me this is an exceptional book, both on the quality and range of its contents as well as presentation. Even if you are not very interested in Bushman Candles the information on Southern African habitats and the botanical art are exceptional. Those who have been waiting a long time for it to be published won’t be disappointed by the end result! 2011 13 x 10 192 pages

Agaves can be impressive and attractive plants and this book shows what can be achieved in landscaping and large pot cultivation in suitable climates. Whilst not specifically oriented towards greenhouse cultivation of the smaller species it none the less has a lot of interest for the enthusiasts of these plants. After a brief introduction to the plants and their cultivation, the majority of the book is an A-Z of the species with information on their habitats based on the author’s experience as well as cultivation. Colour photos show the plants both in habitat and cultivation and have some impressive specimens. A selection of the attractive cultivars are also covered. 2012 9 ¼ x 7 342 pages

A very useful book on these plants in that it gives guidance on the growing times of the year for each genera, which isn’t readily available elsewhere. General information on their habitats and growing are also given, and quite a number of colour illustrations show a sample of the numerous species. The main impact is from the 12 pages of colour illustrations of Lithops, showing variation of forms for each specie and form, which in spite of much larger books published since is still very useful and attractive. Much more useful than its small size would imply. 1986 9 x 6 58 pages

These are the marvellous two volumes from the person who knew the islands so well for forty years starting from the time before the large scale loss of habitat really took hold. Volume 1 covers the North and central Plateau areas of succulent plants, and volume 2 continues in to the southern and southwest areas. A wide variety of plants are included, many highly regarded by Cactus etc growers whilst a few of the zerophytic species may be unfamiliar but none the less fascinating. These large format volumes are sumptuously illustrated with many good colour photos, and are a delight to look at. 12 ¼ x 9 ¼ Volume 1 1995 - 343 pages, Volume 2 1998 - 385 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being "bumped" in transit. View larger image of 'Haworthia for the Collector'Schulz, Rudolf -  Haworthia for the Collector
Haworthias are very popular these days, both for the species and unusually in the C&S world also for cultivars and hybrids. Although there has been a lot published in recent years on these plants, there has been little for the average or enthusiastic collector since Pilbeam’s book was published 25 years ago before colour photos became universal. So this new book which covers many of the most attractive cultivars as well as the species and illustrated in colour is sure to be welcome. Brief introductory sections cover their characteristics and habitat, after which the main part of the book looks at the species and cultivars following Bayer’s 2008 Classification with separate sections for forms which don’t fit neatly with a species and inter generic hybrids. Final sections provide views on where the cultivars might develop in the future, variegations, close up views of leaves and cross section, cultivation, pests etc and finally propagation. All well presented as we have come to expect from this author and publisher. 2009 11 x 8 ¾ 240 pages
