These are the marvellous two volumes from the person who knew the islands so well for forty years starting from the time before the large scale loss of habitat really took hold. Volume 1 covers the North and central Plateau areas of succulent plants, and volume 2 continues in to the southern and southwest areas. A wide variety of plants are included, many highly regarded by Cactus etc growers whilst a few of the zerophytic species may be unfamiliar but none the less fascinating. These large format volumes are sumptuously illustrated with many good colour photos, and are a delight to look at. 12 ¼ x 9 ¼ Volume 1 1995 - 343 pages, Volume 2 1998 - 385 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being "bumped" in transit. The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

That this book has gone in to its fourth edition speaks volumes of its usefulness. It follows the field guide style format of the earlier editions but much chunkier. An introductory section explains the various types of habitats in the area covered, and then goes on to cover the species - - nearly 900 are covered which is a major increase of the original edition - typically two to a page, with a concise description next to a useful sized colour photo. 2015 8 ¼ x 5 ¾ 480 pages

This is a substantial book for those who want to know more about where the plants grow, what they look like in habitat and their variability. It isn’t about cultivation, or the cultivars which are in fashion these days. Based on his 16 field trips the author suggests a new simplified taxonomy. There are profiles of 60 people who have been prominent in their study and also a comprehensive bibliography. Well illustrated with heading on for 2000 photos, you’ll get a good idea of the leaf patterns as there is hardly a flower shown – maybe to show the patterns but the author said he travelled in Southern Africa during the Summer – to avoid the European winter – so no doubt too early for most of them. 2017 12 x 8 ½ 487 pages

Gordon’s books have always covered interesting and important subjects which have been overlooked previously, and this one continues the tradition. Some cacti and succulents have been hybridised or attractive forms selected for a long time, and he explains how this has come about. A large part of the book surveys the results achieved, and if you would like to try yourself to produce new and striking plants he explains the various way to try it – you don’t have to be a large multinational conglomerate for some of the methods which amateurs have successfully used in the past! Illustrated with many colour photos. 11 x 9 ¼ 248 pages 2017
