View larger image of 'The Remarkable Baobab'Pakenham, Thomas -  The Remarkable Baobab
Whilst this well known author was going round the world looking at the trees to include in his marvellous book “Remarkable Trees of the World”, he fell in love with the Baobabs with the result that he devoted a book to just these trees. In addition to the African specie, which is probably the best known, he also saw 3 of the Madagascar species (slimmer and less craggy than the African trees) and the Australian specie (sort of mid way in form). As usual with this author, it is well written, and full of wonderful colour photos. Another interesting and attractive tree for Christmas reading. 143 pages 8 ¾ x 7 ¼ 2004

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

Francis I, the last monarch to rule over the Holy Roman Empire, was obsessed with flowers. In 1791, Francis I of Austria, a plant enthusiast, commissioned Matthias Schmutzer to paint portraits of every flower in his imperial gardens - which took more than three decades to complete. This book features 120 of the most outstanding of Schmutzer's watercolors (only 6 from the collection of 1300 have ever been published before). Painted life size, this high quality large format book reproduces them close to their original size. Sections give biographical information about Francis I, descriptions of the imperial gardens in the ruler's time, and photographs of how they appear today. 2006 13 ½ x 9 ¾ 303 pages
