View larger image of 'Succulents of Southern Africa'Fransden, Robin -  Succulents of Southern Africa
The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

Following on from his first book on these plants 20 years ago, this is everything you’d hope from this well known botanist. It covers the history of their discovery and cultivation, his hunting for them in their natural habitats, garden uses in suitable climates, hybrids, distribution and ecology before going on to describe each of the 55 known and accepted SA species (and a couple of other) each illustrated with colour photos and a full page botanical illustration by Vicky Thomas. Augustbe not the most popular of plants, but Fernwood Press have produced a book that will be enjoyed by many who haven’t previously been captivated by them. 2006 12 x 9 ¼ 176 pages

View larger image of 'The Gardener's Guide to Cactus'Calhoun, Scott -  The Gardener's Guide to Cactus
An introductory book covering 100 of the most attractive species with an emphasis on their use in landscaping and large pot cultivation. Aimed at the popular market, you have to like the common names under which the plants are listed – my favourite is “Lemon Pledge-Scented Pincushion” (for Mam baumii). Nevertheless there is much of interest in this book which starts with the usual introductory sections before going on to the plants organised by plant form and the information includes culinary uses! The colour photos include both plants in cultivation – in pots as well as bedded out - and habitat and there are some impressive clumps and attractive examples so well worth the inexpensive cost. 2012 9 x 8 227 pages

View larger image of '100 Cactus Argentinos: Spanish language'Kiesling & Demaio -  100 Cactus Argentinos: Spanish language
An updated and expanded edition of the book first published in 2005 – this time Roberto Kiesling has teamed up with Pablo Demaio. The first few pages cover what is a cactus and other basic information, and a few at the end are on cultivation. But the vast majority of the book is details about the plants. 29 species get a full page colour photo with text and supplementary colour photos on the opposite one, whereas the rest get just a single whole page with text and colour photos. The vast majority of the photos are of plants obviously in habitat with some equally obviously in cultivation, and some indeterminate! Spanish 2018 9 ½ x 6 ¾ 160 pages
